Cleburne "was near the earliest Johnson County road, an old wagon trail that was used by soldiers traveling from Fort Belknap to Fort Graham. The location had an excellent water source on West Buffalo Creek that attracted travelers, including cattlemen from the nearby Chisholm Trail. During the Civil War the site was used as a bivouac for Johnson County units marching off to war. This temporary facility, known as Camp Henderson, became a permanent settlement on March 23, 1867, when it became necessary to choose a new, centrally located county seat to replace Buchanan. The town was named in honor of Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, under whom many of the men had fought during the Civil War.”

 

You can visit one of the few remaining Carnegie Library buildings built in 1905 that houses the Layland Museum and learn about historic life in Johnson County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Don’t forget to stop by our historic downtown area and stroll around our square. There you’ll find the Johnson County courthouse built in 1913 in all of its grandeur. Cleburne Municipal AirportAirports -To get to Cleburne by air you can fly into DFW Airport which is approximately 50 miles east or Dallas Love Field which is approximately 65 miles east. Private planes can be accommodated at Cleburne Municipal Airport.

Train - Amtrack services Cleburne from across the nation.

Driving – Cleburne is an easy 40 minute drive from downtown Fort Worth. Just take I-35W south to the Cleburne /Burleson exit (Hwy 174) and we are 12 miles south. If you decide to come in from Dallas, take I-35E to Hwy 67 and go west approximately one hour and you are here. From Austin you will take I-35 until it becomes I-35W and then exit at the Alvarado/Cleburne exit (Hwy 67). Go west 10 miles and take the Business 67 right into the heart of town. It is approximately a three hour drive. However you decide to arrive, Cleburne is the perfect final destination. Amtrack

At Your Service – Once you’ve arrived, call the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce at (817) 645-2455 so we can assist you in making the most of your visit. If there’s anything you need, we’ll point you in the right direction. Conveniences such as laundries and dry cleaners are just a few blocks away. Numerous ATM’s are accessible 24 hours a day and full service banks are also close by. If you need a ride, you can choose a rental car or the local bus service, Cletran. Make sure you get a few souvenirs while in town so you can remember your vacation when you return home with a little of our “Texas Hospitality” in your suitcase.

Climate – Cleburne enjoys mild weather pretty much year around. The summers are a bit warmer, with temperatures averaging in the mid-90’s, but the annual average high temperature is 78.1 degrees Fahrenheit. The winters average low temperature is 53.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Cleburne averages 34 inches of precipitation annually, most of this during the summer months of June through October.
